Why bother cutting at all?
Two rules are in conflict. Grip socks need to sit against your foot and the boot to work — so they have to be the layer nearest your skin. But match rules say your team's official sock colour must be visible. You can't do both with one sock. The fix: wear the grip sock underneath, and cut the foot off the club sock so only the coloured tube remains on top.
What you'll need
- Your club / team socks
- A pair of grip socks
- Scissors
- Sock tape or pre-wrap (optional, to hold the join)
The 4 steps
- Grip socks on first. Straight onto bare feet, so the pads grip your foot and the inside of the boot.
- Cut the club sock. Cut across just above the ankle and remove the foot section. Keep the shin and calf tube with the colours.
- Pull the tube over the top. Slide the remaining club-sock tube up over the grip sock so the team colour covers your shin and shin pad.
- Tape if it slips. A wrap of sock tape or pre-wrap around the join keeps everything locked for the full 90.
Quick answer
- Grip sock goes on first, against your foot — never over the top.
- Cut the foot off your club sock and keep the coloured tube.
- Pull that tube over the grip sock for a legal, team-coloured shin.
- Tape the join if it slips. Total time: about 30 seconds once you've cut them.
Two tips so you don't ruin a sock
First, cut a little higher than you think — you can always trim more, but you can't add fabric back. Second, cut once and reuse: the chopped club sock is now your permanent match pair, so you only do the scissors part one time. After that it's just grip-sock-on, tube-over, done.
