Why washing matters for grip

The pads grip because their silicone surface has a slight texture that bites into your skin and the boot lining. Anything that coats that surface or heats the silicone works against you. Fabric softener leaves a slick film; high heat softens and degrades the material. Avoid those two and you have won most of the battle.

The step-by-step routine

  1. Turn them inside out. This shields the outer grip pads from the harshest tumbling and keeps the silicone away from zips and rough fabrics.
  2. Wash cold, or at 30°C. Cool water cleans a cotton-rich sock perfectly well and keeps the silicone stable.
  3. Use a mild detergent. No need for anything aggressive — sweat and mud come out fine on a gentle cycle.
  4. Skip the fabric softener. This is the big one. Softener coats the pads and dulls the grip.
  5. Air dry. Lay flat or hang. No tumble dryer on high heat.
  6. Do not iron the grip pads. Direct heat and silicone do not mix.
If you remember one rule, make it this: no fabric softener, no high heat. Everything else is forgiving.

Common mistakes that kill grip early

Quick answer

  • Inside out, cold or 30°C — gentle on the silicone.
  • No fabric softener — it coats and dulls the grip.
  • Air dry, no high heat — keeps the pads and shape intact.
  • Never iron the pads — direct heat degrades silicone.

Rotate a few pairs

The other half of care is simply having spares. Rotating between a few pairs means each one is washed gently, dried fully and rested between sessions instead of thrown back on damp. That alone stretches how long they last. If you want the full picture on lifespan, read our guide on how long grip socks last.
