The one rule: grip sock goes on first

Grip socks only work if the pads can touch two surfaces — your skin on the inside, and your boot lining on the outside. That means the grip sock always goes on first, against the bare foot, with the club sock layered over the top. Wear it the other way round and the pads are trapped between two layers of fabric, doing nothing.

Step by step

  1. Put the grip sock on first. Pull the grip sock onto your bare foot before anything else. Seat your heel fully into the heel of the sock so the grip pads sit flat under your foot.
  2. Choose full sock or cut-off method. Decide whether to pull a full club sock over the top, or use the cut-off method by removing the foot of the club sock so the grip pads still contact the boot.
  3. Pull the club sock over the top. Slide your football or team sock up over the grip sock, keeping it smooth and wrinkle-free over the ankle and shin.
  4. Secure and put your boot on. Add sock tape around the calf if your club requires it, then put your boot on. The outside grip pads press against the boot lining to lock the foot in place.

The outside pads need to reach the boot lining — which is exactly why the cut-off method exists.

Full sock vs the cut-off method

There are two ways to keep your team colours on show:

The point of both methods is the same: keep your kit legal without smothering the grip pads.

Quick answer

  • Grip sock always goes on first, against the bare foot.
  • Club sock goes over the top — never underneath.
  • The cut-off method keeps team colours while freeing the pads.
  • Sock tape is optional if your league needs a tidy calf.

Which method should you pick?

If you just want it done, pull a full sock over the top and go. If you want the outside pads pressing straight onto the boot for maximum lock, spend two minutes with a pair of scissors and use the cut-off method. Either way you stay kit-legal.
